Ory
Open-source, API-first IAM for customer, B2B, and AI agent identity management.
What makes Ory different
Ory distinguishes itself by offering a modular, API-first identity infrastructure that avoids the monolithic lock-in typical of hyperscaler IAM solutions. Instead of a single black-box service, Ory decomposes IAM into distinct, composable microservices (Kratos, Hydra, Keto, etc.). This allows developers to build exactly the identity system they need, whether that is simple email/password auth or complex, multi-tenant B2B federation.
The platform is designed for scale and flexibility, supporting three primary identity domains: Customer Identity (CIAM), B2B Enterprise IAM, and the emerging AI Agent Identity. With the rise of autonomous AI agents, Ory provides specialized controls for machine-to-machine authentication and authorization, ensuring that non-human actors have secure, auditable access to resources.
Deployment is equally flexible. Users can run the open-source components on their own infrastructure for full data control, or use Ory Network, a fully managed SaaS offering. This “bring-your-own-infrastructure” or “fully-managed” choice ensures that organizations with strict compliance requirements (HIPAA, GDPR, SOC 2) are not forced into a specific data residency model dictated by a cloud provider’s default IAM service.
Pricing model
Ory uses a usage-based pricing model for its managed Ory Network service, primarily charged per Active User (MAU).
- Free Tier: Available for development and testing, typically including a limited number of monthly active users (e.g., up to 1,000 MAUs) and core features.
- Pro/Team Tiers: Scale with the number of active users, unlocking higher rate limits, advanced security features like social logins, and priority support.
- Enterprise: Custom pricing for high-volume workloads, requiring dedicated support, SLAs, and potentially on-premise or private cloud deployment options.
The open-source version is free to use, though commercial support and enterprise features (like SAML/SCIM for B2B) require an Ory Enterprise License. This model stands out because it aligns costs directly with growth, and the open-source nature means you can self-host to cap costs regardless of scale, provided you have the engineering resources to maintain it.
When it fits
- Developers seeking flexibility: Teams that want to avoid vendor lock-in and prefer to compose their own IAM stack from best-of-breed components.
- AI/Agentic Applications: Projects requiring robust identity management for autonomous AI agents and machine-to-machine communication.
- Strict Compliance Needs: Organizations that need to host identity data on-premise or in private clouds to meet regulatory requirements, leveraging the open-source core.
- B2B SaaS Products: Companies needing complex multi-tenant identity features, SSO, and SCIM provisioning out of the box.
When it doesn’t
- Simple, Low-Traffic Apps: If you only need basic authentication for a small internal tool, the complexity of Ory’s modular architecture may be overkill compared to simpler hosted solutions.
- Monolithic Cloud Ecosystems: If your entire stack is deeply integrated into AWS Cognito or Azure AD B2C and you have no desire to decouple identity, migrating to Ory adds operational overhead.
