What makes Twilio different
Twilio’s IoT offering was distinct in the cloud landscape for bringing developer-friendly APIs to hardware connectivity. By treating SIM cards as programmable resources via REST APIs, it allowed developers to manage device connectivity, data usage, and network selection with the same ease as sending an SMS or making a voice call. This abstraction layer significantly reduced the friction typically associated with Mobile Network Operator (MNO) contracts and legacy IoT platforms.
However, the provider’s identity in this sector has fundamentally shifted. In March 2023, it was announced that KORE Wireless acquired Twilio’s IoT business unit, with the transition completing on June 1, 2023. While the Twilio brand remains the entry point for console access and API interaction during the transition period, the underlying infrastructure, team, and billing are moving to KORE. This makes Twilio IoT a transitional service rather than a standalone core product of the parent company today.
For current users, the experience remains consistent through the Twilio Console, but future development and feature releases are now driven by KORE. This acquisition highlights a trend where specialized IoT connectivity is consolidating into dedicated carriers rather than general-purpose CPaaS providers.
